Normalerweise schreibe ich die Eintr\u00e4ge auf dem Heimflug, aber dieses Mal war es anders. Abgesehen davon, dass ich vor M\u00fcdigkeit gebraten war, war mein Herz vor Trauer verkrampft und ich f\u00fchlte mich, als h\u00e4tte ich eine Socke verschluckt. Abschiede und Ver\u00e4nderungen bringen mich um, auch wenn ich sie brauche.<\/div>\n

<\/div>\n
Neulich hatte ich nicht nur Heimweh, weil ich aus einem Land zur\u00fcckkehrte, in dem ich das letzte Jahr verbracht hatte, sondern auch, weil ich mein bisheriges Leben hinter mir lie\u00df.<\/div>\n
<\/div>\n
Und so ging es mir seitdem, ohne dass ich schreiben wollte, zwischen Schluchzen und Schluchzen, (vielleicht \u00fcbertreibe ich hier ein wenig) versuchte ich, diese Socke zu verdauen, w\u00e4hrend die Erinnerungen auf mich einprasselten, bis ich begriff, dass es keinen Sinn hatte, so zu sein, dass ich endlich nach Afrika zur\u00fcckgekehrt war, und das war es, was ich so sehr wollte...<\/div>\n

und ich musste \"nach vorne\" schauen und das Alpham\u00e4nnchen in mir wieder zum Vorschein bringen (\u00fcbrigens, was f\u00fcr eine gro\u00dfe \u00c4hnlichkeit auf diesem Foto mit dem Kerl, der f\u00fcr diesen Nespresso geworben hat... wie hie\u00df er noch gleich? George Clooney, glaube ich...).<\/div>\n

Und so kehrte ich nach Afrika zur\u00fcck, bereit, jeden Tag neue Dinge zu entdecken und mich in jedem Moment \u00fcberraschen zu lassen, immer mit offenen Augen. So kommt das B\u00f6se Afrikas ins Spiel, das einen nicht mehr losl\u00e4sst. Eines Tages f\u00fchlt man sich in der Lage, mehr zu sehen als den Akazienbaum auf dem Foto unten, und man erhascht einen Blick auf ein paar Elefanten, die dahinter lauern und Verstecken spielen, und da f\u00e4ngt man an, in die Falle zu gehen...<\/div>\n

Nun, wie gesagt, ich war in meinen Tiefen, am Ufer des Viktoriasees, und machte ein Nickerchen im Schatten einer Kokospalme (w\u00e4hrend ich versuchte, herauszufinden, warum das Schlafen unter einer Kokospalme in einigen L\u00e4ndern die h\u00e4ufigste Todesursache ist), als ich feststellte, dass ich die Vereinigten Staaten verlassen und kaum etwas \u00fcber Virginia geschrieben hatte....<\/div>\n

Ich wei\u00df, dass ich in den letzten Monaten die eine oder andere Meile auf der Suche nach besonderen Orten zur\u00fcckgelegt habe, aber ich habe sie auch nur ein paar Mac Donalds von zu Hause entfernt gefunden, und ich habe Ihnen nie davon erz\u00e4hlt.<\/div>\n

Jetzt, wo ich nicht mehr dort bin, erinnere ich mich an so unglaubliche Orte wie den First Landing Park, die Str\u00e4nde der Outerbanks, die wilden Ponys im Chincoteague Park, die Mangroven des Great Swamp Dismal...<\/div>\n

oder seine historischen D\u00f6rfer, Williamsburg, Yorktown, Monticello...<\/div>\n

In diesem Jahr habe ich ein sehr aufopferungsvolles Leben gef\u00fchrt, aber ich habe viele Momente in vollen Z\u00fcgen genossen, und es wird mir schwer fallen, die fr\u00fchmorgendlichen L\u00e4ufe entlang der Uferpromenade von Lafayette zu vergessen, den Brunch auf der F\u00e4hre von Porstmouth, die Lesenachmittage auf dem Ocean View Pier, die Krabben zum Abendessen auf der Dock Side, die Drinks im Hot Tuna... (ich habe das Gef\u00fchl, dass es, wenn man es so erz\u00e4hlt, den Anschein haben k\u00f6nnte, dass mein Leiden nicht \u00fcberm\u00e4\u00dfig war, aber die Prozession war drinnen).<\/div>\n

Und ich werde es auch vermissen, auf der Terrasse zu fr\u00fchst\u00fccken und bei einer so erholsamen Aussicht (ich spreche vom Fluss) neue Energie zu tanken.<\/div>\n

Was ich jedoch nie vergessen werde, sind die Freunde, die ich dort zur\u00fcckgelassen habe, ihre Gastfreundschaft, die Gespr\u00e4che mit JFT, wenn mich die Arbeit \"\u00fcberw\u00e4ltigte\" oder mich die Nostalgie \u00fcberkam, der spanische Mittagstisch, die Partys bei Freunden und die moralische Unterst\u00fctzung von allen, also vielen Dank an alle, an alle, und an einige von Ihnen ganz besonders.<\/div>\n

Das Beste an meinem Beruf werden immer meine Kameraden sein. Wenn ich an sie denke, f\u00fchle ich mich an die Verse erinnert, die Shackletons Heldentat beschreiben: \"Wenn ich auf der wei\u00dfen Stra\u00dfe nach vorne schaue, ist immer ein anderer neben mir\". (T.S. Elliot) (Ich kann mir vorstellen, dass ich Ihnen die Haare zu Berge stehen lasse).<\/div>\n

Und wie ich eingangs sagte, verlasse ich nicht nur Virginia, sondern lasse auch viele Jahre in der Armee hinter mir... Als Mandela das Gef\u00e4ngnis von Robben Island verlie\u00df und gefragt wurde, was der Unterschied zwischen dem Mann sei, der ins Gef\u00e4ngnis ging, und dem Mann, der 30 Jahre sp\u00e4ter herauskam, sagte er, er sei \"erwachsen\" geworden. Ich f\u00fcrchte, dass ich nach einer \u00e4hnlichen (nicht so langen) Zeit in der Armee nicht in der Lage sein werde, dasselbe zu sagen, da es sonst nicht ganz der Wahrheit entsprechen w\u00fcrde.<\/div>\n

Ich bin also bereits drau\u00dfen. Ich hoffe, dass ich mich gut an meine neue Situation gew\u00f6hnen werde, denn es ist leichter, einen Zivilisten zu militarisieren als einen Milit\u00e4rmann zu zivilisieren ;-). Es ist mir schwer gefallen, diesen Schritt zu tun, aber obwohl mir die Armee fast alles in meinem Leben gegeben hat, brauche ich jetzt andere Dinge, viel mehr .... und ich habe meine Familie sehr vermisst. Deshalb bin ich gegangen.<\/div>\n
