Drop everything for a moment and let your imagination run wild. Dream that you are in a caravan of camels, crossing narrow and steep gorges, to reach a sea of rolling dunes dotted with oases and large palm groves...
The closest thing to that dream is less than three hours away by plane, and that is the famous dunes of the Ametlich in the desert of Mauritania The road leading to them from Nouackchott is an uninterrupted succession of dunes, acacia trees, villages, camels and oases that will shorten the journey to the city of Tie. A few kilometres from Tie, are the Terjit oasis and that of Azougui, the former capital of the Almoravids and, continuing eastwards, the impressive pass of Almodjar. Behind it lie the legendary cities of Ouadane y ChinguettiThe caravans, laden with merchandise, used to meet and make their pilgrimage to the city of Oualata with Sijilmasa on the other side of the sea of dunes. From the great dune, which threatens to bury the town of Chinguettiyou get a special view over this city World Heritage Site, the last place on earth where you could imagine finding incredible Koranic libraries. Waking up to the call to prayer and watching the camels arrive at the wells before heading down the Majabat al Koubra, o Great Crossing Desertis an unforgettable spectacle.
A few hours' camel ride away, hidden among the sea of dunes, there are palm groves like those at Mhairet, Toungad, Tanouchert y El Meddah o gueltas surrounded by reeds where we can take a relaxing bath and set up the tent to spend the night.
On the way we will cross spectacular gorges, hamadas and dunes, we will cross wadisvillages Berbers and oases; we will see cave paintings, we will reach special places such as Geb el Richatthe so-called eye of the Saharaor mythical ones such as Fort Sagannethe famous fort of the Foreign Legion.
It is an incredibly beautiful territory - are you going to let it remain just a dream or are you going to make it a reality?
